Let’s look at how abrasive dirt really is and how it effects your rugs.  If you look at common sand you can see the sharp edges.  Sand is largely made of silica.  Silica is what glass is made of.  When you walk across you rugs, you put your full weight on them and this can start to cut the fibers of your rug.  Wool is just hair and therefore is easy to cut.  Rugs can last hundreds of years but not if subjected to this type of wear.

There is something that makes the problem even worse.  Wool is really great at hiding dirt.  Wool fiber has scales on it that provides a place to hide dirt.  The problem is that most people wait until their wool rug looks dirty to have them washed and that can be a problem as this can have unbelievable amounts of damaging dirt and this also mean that there is a lot of damage done to the fibers of the rug.

You should be washing your wool rug every 1 to 3 years to avoid damage that cannot be undone.  When you have your wool rug washed, you will see the original shine and luster restored once more.  However, it is worth noting that if damage has been done we may not be able to fully restore all of the colors or fully replace any “bald” spots on your rug.  If you make sure that you are properly vacuuming your wool rug and have it washed as recommended then you should expect to be able to get many years of enjoyment out of your rug!
